The construction of Delhi University’s new East Campus will begin soon, as on June 14, 2023, Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced that the construction of Delhi University’s new East Campus is expected to begin in the next eight months and would be completed by the end of 2026.
In his statement to PTI, Singh said, “The construction of the East Campus will begin in the next eight months. The process is underway. We have applied for funding with the Government of India.”
The VC further added that the new campus would offer law programmes and provide more opportunities for higher education. Delhi University’s East Campus will develop along the lines of its already existing North and South Campuses.
The construction plans for new campuses were announced a few years ago, which envisaged the construction of two new campuses: the East and West campuses.
It has been stated that the construction of the new campus would not just help spur new educational opportunities but would also reduce the administrative burden on the existing two campuses.
Currently, the administrative work of 24 colleges is undertaken by the South Campus branch, and the remaining 40 plus colleges work in coordination with the North Campus branch. Mr.Singh further added that the university has sent a proposal to the Central Government for funding the construction of the new campus.
The construction site for Delhi University’s East Campus is Surajmal Vihar. The area is located near the Karkardooma district court complex and is accessible by Delhi Metro’s Blue and Red lines.
The university has also planned for the construction of the West Campus in the Roshanpur area near Najafgarh to help cater to the students hailing from the rural areas of Delhi and Haryana. However, VC said that as of now, there are no plans for the construction of the same.
