WRESTLER’S PROTEST : THE STORY SO FAR

As last week marked the completion of one month of the protest, here are the highlights of the protest so far

The two FIR’S filed against Wrestling Federation Of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh by the wrestlers alleges him of demanding ‘sexual favors” in lieu of professional assistance . The BJP MP is accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers including a minor.

The wrestlers who represented India at international events are protesting since 23rd April at Jantar Mantar , Delhi , demanding immediate  arrest and action against WFI chief and MP Brij Bhushan Singh.

Various Opposition leaders showed support to the protesting wrestlers, with West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee directing two of her party’s MPs to visit the site. Other Opposition leaders including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar and lamented the government’s ‘support’ for the WFI chief. Indian Olympic Association president P.T Usha also visited the protesting site and showed support to the protesting wrestlers .

Protesting wrestlers challenged Brij Bhushan Singh for taking narco test. At a press conference, Sakshi Malik said, “I challenge the WFI president to take a narco test. We are also willing to take the test. Let the truth come out in the open, who is the culprit and who is not”. In response, Brij Bhushan said that he is ready to take the test on the condition that Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia take it too. The protestors further demanded that the tests be monitored by the Supreme Court.

On 28th May , when the whole country was witnessing the inauguration of new parliament building by PM Modi . Protesting wrestlers started marching towards the new parliament .  Vinesh Phogat , Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia were badly manhandled and were booked for rioting and obstructing public servant . Monitoring this incident , United World Wrestling condemned the detention and treatment of wrestlers. Even  the International Olympic Committee condemned the treatment of wrestlers by Delhi Police , terming it ‘very disturbing’ in a strongly-worded statement .

Protesting wrestlers reached Haridwar to throw away their medals in Ganga . but soon after reaching they reversed their decision after rethinking and gave five days ultimatum to the Government. After which they have called for a hunger strike until death at India Gate .

Amidst the ongoing protest BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh is busy preparing for his Maha Rally in Ayodhya flexing is political muscles in UP.
