BJP continues to top in political donations

BJP received the highest political donation in the country. According to the Election Commission of India, it collected Rs 2555 crore of the Rs 3355 crore through electoral bonds in the year 2019-20, accounting for over 75% of all electoral bonds. Congress, on the other hand, was able to get only 9%.

Bharatiya Janta Party continues to amass enormous funds amongst all the political parties in India. As per the BJP’s audit report submitted to the ECI, BJP with Rs 3501 crores, remains the highest recipient. It was Rs 1904 crore in 2018-2019. In the year 2018-19, BJP got Rs 1450 crore through electoral bonds.

These electoral bonds have been a subject of debate for being non-transparent since it was first introduced in 2018. These bonds allow the political parties in India to receive donations from anonymous donors are sold four times once a year in January, April, July and October.

Congress, contrarily, saw a decline in its donation. It had received Rs 383 crore in 2018-2019, which was said to be 17% of the total electoral bonds while it fell to Rs 318 crores in 2019-20.

Other opposition political parties who received funds are Mamata’s TMC, Stalin’s DMK, Shard Pawar’s NCP, Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP and Lalu Yadav’s RJD, and they garnered Rs 100.46 crores, Rs 45 crores, Rs 29.25 crore, Rs 18 crores and Rs 2.5 crore, respectively.

The BJP earned more than twice of its five important rivals combined, in the final year that ends in March 2019.

Further, ADR’s (Association for Democratic Reforms) report says that in the year 2018-19, India’s seven political parties got Rs 3749.37 crores of it 67% were from untraceable sources
