Salaries and allowances of MLAs of Delhi have been hiked, after a nod, from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The hike is the first in the last years.

In 2015, Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Govt had unanimously passed the bill increasing the emoluments of MLAs in the national capital to 2.10 lakh. The bill later became null and void as it was tabled without prior consultation from the concerned authorities.

With this hike, an MLA in Delhi will get a basic salary of Rs 30,000 per month and allowances of Rs 60,000. Cumulatively, an MLA in Delhi will get Rs 90,00O per month.

After the revised emoluments, of this Rs 90,000, Rs 30,000 is the basic salary, Rs 25,000 is constituency allowance, Rs 15,000 is a secretarial allowance, Rs 10,000 is telephone allowance and other Rs 10,000 is conveyance allowance.

MLAs in Delhi, in the past, used to draw a total amount of Rs 53,000 per month that included Rs 13,000 as the salary while the rest Rs 30,000 was allowances.

A Member of Parliament in India gets Rs 230,000 per month as his combined salary and allowances.

MLAs salary hike is though not at par with what the Govt of Delhi sought from the MHA. The AAP Govt in Delhi had asked for an increase from Rs 13,000 to Rs 50,000 which was fixed at Rs 30,000 by the MHA.

Besides these, reimbursements have also been hiked for the MLAs. Similarly, salaries of key constitutional authorities like the speaker, deputy speaker, Chief Minister and his all cabinet ministers, leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly and chief whip also have raised, which as now is Rs 1.2 lakh per month.

The legislators in Delhi had seen the last hike in their salaries in 2011 when late Sheila Dixit was the incumbent Chief Minister.

A proposal to increase salaries and allowances of the MLAs had been pending with the MHA for over the last five years. The AAP Govt had formed a six-member committee to deal with the centre over the matter of salary hikes way back in 2018.

According to the Delhi Govt, the centre has agreed to only a 40% hike of the proposed salary.

Comparatively, as per reports, an MLA in Telangana gets Rs 2.5 lakh per month, in Uttarakhand, it’s Rs 204,000, for Himachal Pradesh, the amount is Rs 190,000 while for Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana earnings stand at Rs 105,000, Rs 142,500, and Rs155,000 respectively.

Notably, in a poor state like Bihar, an MLA receives Rs 135,000 per month. Karnataka pays Rs 165,000 to its MLAs, Andhra Pradesh’s MLAs get Rs 175,000 and the tiny state Goa gives Rs 199,000 to its MLAs.
