Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq has been charged with sedition for equating the Islamist terrorist group Taliban with India’s freedom fighters.

A case against him and two others were registered, in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, by the complainant, who accused him and others of comparing the Taliban with Indian freedom fighters and celebrating its victory in Afghanistan.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sambhal district has corroborated, MP’s acts attract sedition as the Taliban is designated a terror group in India, and therefore an FIR has been lodged. Two people who had made a similar claim on Facebook were also booked.

Deputy Chief Minister of UP, Keshav Prasad Maurya, castigated MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq for his comment and compared it with the statement of Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan.

MP Rahman has allegedly said, on August 16, the Taliban wanted their country to be free and run it. India fought for its freedom when it was under the British. He also called the Taliban a force that had not led any foreign power to establish control over Afghanistan.

BJP leaders Rajesh Signal, Zonal Vice President of Western Uttar Pradesh, and BJP’s district President Omveer Khadagwansi filed the FIR against MP Barq late at night.

The police have booked him under non-bailable sections 124a (sedition) 153a (promoting enmity between groups) and 295a (outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq refuted the allegation and said it was misconstrued, and he supports governments policies.
